Five of the nine bicycles stolen from a bike-safety program have been found and four people have been cited in connection with the stolen bikes, police said.
The Giant-brand mountain bikes in various sizes were stolen from a locked trailer on Broadalbin Street near St. Mary’s School sometime before Saturday, when a program coordinator discovered them missing.
There were 35 bikes, used for teaching bike handling and safety to Albany fifth-graders, inside the trailer. The nine stolen bikes were worth a total of about $2,300.
This morning, officers got a call from someone who knew about the bikes and who saw two of them being ridden to a residence in the 1000 block of 10th Avenue S.W.
Police found the bikes, and cited Gary Gomez, 50, and Steve Sims, 24, for theft by receiving.
Albany Police Capt. Eric Carter said that three other bikes were found Sunday, and police cited Cody Lynn Shawn, 30, and Jeffrey Lynn Burman, 49, also for theft by receiving.
More details on Sunday’s recovery weren’t available because the report wasn’t complete this morning.
