DEXTER n The Oregon State men’s Varsity 8 crew team defeated Gonzaga at Dexter Lake on Saturday but the women’s Varsity 8 was defeated.

The men defeated the Bulldogs 6:41.1-6:47.4 over the 2,000-meter course. The women lost by 4.04 seconds.

“The wind shifted around for the Varsity 8 race, and went from being a real strong tailwind for the JV guys to a very strong headwind for the Varsity,” men’s coach Steve Todd said. “They handled the changes in conditions really well.

“It is something that we don’t have to face very often on the Willamette. So being able to handle weather conditions is a big part of this and the guys did a good job.”

In the women’s race, the Beavers fell behind early and never recovered despite a strong push in the last 500 meters.

The OSU women are idle until the April 12-13 Virginia Triple Dual in Charlottesville; it also features Columbia, Michigan State and Virginia.

The men travel to Redwood Shores, Calf., next weekend for the Windermere Collegiate Classic. On Saturday, they race Gonzaga and Stanford; on Sunday, they race UC San Diego.
