Unopposed Benton candidates progress to general election
CORVALLIS — Voters gave the unchallenged Benton County commissioners, Democrats Jay Dixon and Annabelle Jaramillo, about 12,500 votes apiece, while newcomer Chris Nusbaum, who ran unopposed on the Republican ticket, received about 5,500 votes in Tuesday’s election.
Nusbaum will face Jaramillo in the November general election. Dixon’s name will appear on the November ballot, but as of now he has no challengers.
Dixon received 12,497 votes, but 5,642 people who cast ballots did not vote for him and 124 others wrote in a candidate’s name.
Jaramillo received 12,649 votes, but 5,380 people who voted did not vote for her and there were 232 write-ins.
Nusbaum, a sales director, received 5,554 votes, but 2,231 people did not vote for him and there were 78 write-ins.
Voters in Corvallis’ Ward 7 chose retired educator Jeanne Raymond to finish the late Scott Zimbrick’s term on the city council. Ward 7 is in northwest Corvallis and includes Witham Hill and parts of the Timberhill neighborhood.
Raymond emphasized the environment in her campaign and ended up the winner by more than 14 percent of ballots cast. Her opponent was Rick Schroff, who positioned himself as a voice for the business community on the council.
According to final unofficial results, 28,867 people voted in Benton County: 18,867 Democrats, 7,865 Republicans and 2,738 non-partisans.
